BIMCO and other Industry Associations develop optional transit corridors for Persian Gulf, Strait Of Hormuz and Sea of Oman

BIMCO and fellow industry associations have developed two (2) transit corridors for the consideration of Ship Masters, Owners and Operators for Persian Gulf, Strait Of Hormuz and Sea of Oman; these areas continue to remain one of the most challenging regions in terms of maritime security with a wide variety of threats to vessels and, in order to address this evolving situation, maritime industry associations issued a routing guidance as attached.

This guidance complements existing maritime security guidance, including BMP5 and introduces two (2) Transit Corridors which join at the Strait of Hormuz Traffic Separation Scheme, as follows:

  • The Persian Gulf to the Strait of Hormuz Traffic Separation Scheme (the Persian Gulf Transit Corridor),
    &
  • The Sea of Oman to the Strait of Hormuz Traffic Separation Scheme (the Sea of Oman Transit Corridor)

For the sake of good order, use of the corridors is not mandatory, and decisions should be based on a thorough security risk assessment of vessel’s operator and Master.
